The Amazon is facing a crisis of dispossession, violence, and democratic erosion that is testing the effectiveness of the Escazú Agreement and the protection of those who defend the territory.

While states accumulate diagnoses and promises, organizations and communities are taking the initiative to document environmental violence and uphold in practice the principles of the agreement.

Some experts and local organizations consider this agreement as a mechanism conceived by transnational powers to limit the region's autonomy.

The agreement marks a turning point in the regional environmental agenda and has enormous potential in the process of building fairer, more equitable and sustainable societies. Once it comes into force, our task as citizens will be to work to ensure that it is ratified by all countries and becomes a reality.
